Ege university hosts discussion on Khojaly tragedy

A panel discussion titled “Khojaly in All Its Aspects and Azerbaijan–Armenia Relations” was held in Izmir, jointly organized by the Faculty of Literature of Ege University, the Institute of Turkic World Studies, and the Izmir Azerbaijanis Association.

The event began with the national anthems of Azerbaijan and Türkiye, followed by a moment of silence in memory of the victims of the Khojaly genocide and all martyrs.

A documentary film about the Khojaly genocide was then screened.

In his opening remarks, Chairman of the Izmir Azerbaijanis Association Parviz Altay provided detailed information about the Khojaly genocide. He stated that the atrocities committed in Khojaly constitute genocide and crimes against humanity under international law and emphasized that those responsible must be held accountable before justice.

Head of the Institute of Turkic World Studies, Professor Abdullah Temizkan, described the Khojaly genocide not only as a tragedy for Azerbaijan but as a bleeding wound for the entire Turkic world. He stressed the importance of sustained efforts to ensure that the tragedy is not forgotten and is accurately conveyed to future generations. He also expressed confidence that the panel would contribute significantly to promoting the truths about Khojaly in both academic and public spheres.

Cavid Ismayil, Head of Department at the State Committee on Work with Diaspora of the Republic of Azerbaijan, noted in his speech that despite Azerbaijan emerging victorious in the Patriotic War, President and Supreme Commander-in-Chief Ilham Aliyev demonstrated humanism by extending a hand of peace to the opposing side—an unprecedented step in the history of warfare. He underlined that restoring historical justice and communicating the truth to the international community are integral parts of the peace process.

Following the speeches, the event continued with panel discussions. The session was moderated by Professor Vafa Gurban of Ege University and featured Professors Umut Kedikli and Zafer Atar from Manisa Celal Bayar University.

The panel discussions covered the historical, legal, and political aspects of the Khojaly genocide, as well as the past and current state of Azerbaijan–Armenia relations. Participants emphasized the importance of increasing academic research, conferences, and discussions on the subject. The new realities formed in the region after the Patriotic War, as well as Azerbaijan’s initiatives and steps aimed at ensuring lasting peace in the South Caucasus, were also highlighted.
