Azerbaijanis in Georgia honor April 9 victims

Azerbaijanis living in Georgia commemorated the victims of the tragic events that took place in the country on April 9, 1989.

Representatives of the Caucasus Law and Integration Center, operating in Georgia’s Bolnisi district, visited the memorial located in the Bolnisi Culture and Recreation Park and laid flowers in front of it. The victims were then honored with a minute of silence.

The Executive Director of the center, Rezo Hasanov, provided detailed information about the war. He noted that on April 9, 1989, during a peaceful protest on Rustaveli Avenue in Tbilisi, Soviet troops carried out a brutal crackdown against unarmed civilians, resulting in the deaths of 21 people.

Other speakers emphasized that the April 9 events are considered one of the most painful yet honorable chapters in the Georgian people’s struggle for freedom. They stressed that preserving the memory of the victims and upholding the values for which they sacrificed their lives is one of the key responsibilities of the younger generation.

Another commemorative event was held in Rustavi. Members and students of the Rustavi Education and Culture Center visited the April 9 memorial in the city and laid flowers.

The head of the center, Raida Darziyeva, stated that they gathered not only to remember a tragic day but also to understand the resilience of freedom and determination. She described April 9 as a symbol of unity on Georgia’s path to independence.

“Do not forget that being a citizen of an independent country is both a great pride and a great responsibility,” she said.
