Iran eyes to increase sturgeon meat and caviar production

TEHRAN, Iran, July 18. Iran is pursuing to increase caviar and sturgeon meat production, said Naser Karami Rad, the Director General of Sock Enhancement and Conservation of Aquatic Genetic Resources of Iran Fisheries Organization, Trend reports citing ILNA.

"Iran is planning to produce 8,000 tons of sturgeon meat and more than 100 tons of caviar in 2025," he said.

It is expected that Iran will work to increase the sturgeon production to 16 tons in the current year and increase it further to 20 tons in the upcoming year, Karami Rad indicated, adding that Iran exports sturgeon meat to the Caspian Sea countries, including Azerbaijan and Russia.

Iran's caviar worth at €1,200 per kilo, and according to Iran customs statistics , the country exported 5.5 tons of caviar , of which about 3.7 tons got exported via customs, while about 50 percent of the product is transported outside the country by passengers.

He underlined that the production process of sturgeon meat is four years and farming 110,000 fish would cost 10 billion rials (about $238) per day.
