BAKU, Azerbaijan, July 8. The Permanent Mission of Turkmenistan to the UN conducted the procedure of creating a Group of Friends on Sustainable Transport on a virtual platform, which was attended by more than 90 representatives of UN member states, Trend reports citing the Foreign Affairs Ministry of Turkmenistan.
At the opening of the meeting, the Permanent Representative of Turkmenistan to the UN, Ambassador Aksoltan Ataeva, said that Turkmenistan made a proposal to the UN several years ago to adopt a special resolution of the General Assembly on transport issues.
She noted that at the initiative of Turkmenistan and with the support of the UN member states, 4 resolutions on transport issues were adopted, which for the first time since the creation of the world organization approved some common approaches and recommendations in the field of functioning of global transport corridors.
Representatives of 11 countries that joined the Group of Friends spoke at the meeting, who noted the importance and timeliness of creating such a platform to provide an opportunity to exchange views on existing transport problems and ways to solve them.
Following the meeting, a letter with information about the creation of a Group of Friends of Sustainable Transport has been sent to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and to the President of the 76th session of the UN General Assembly Abdulla Shahid.
