Austria’s gas storages to fully cover domestic demand - ministry

BAKU, Azerbaijan, October 14. In order to ensure security of supply for households and the economy and to reduce dependence on Russian natural gas supplies, Austria has taken comprehensive measures, Federal Ministry for Climate Action, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation and Technology told Trend.

“The basics are filling Austria's storage facilities, diversifying import routes and reducing consumption of Russian gas through energy carrier switching, efficiency, and energy savings. Long-term measures to secure Austria's energy supply lie in diversification as well as further expansion of energy from renewable sources.

Austria has very large gas storage facilities in comparison with the rest of Europe. After Latvia, Austria is second in the EU in terms of storage capacity. Theoretically, there is room for more than our entire annual gas consumption in domestic storage facilities, so domestic gas demand could be covered in total,” said the ministry.

“Austrian companies have secured pipeline capacities to other regions in order to be less dependent on Russian gas supplies. Domestically, work is underway to expand the production of biogas and green hydrogen, and measures are being taken to reduce gas consumption - for example, with the current mission11 energy-saving campaign.”
