Iraq suspends fruit imports from Iran

TEHRAN, Iran, July 24. Iraq is suspending the import of fruit and vegetable from Iran, said the chairman of Iran Fruit and Vegetable Traders Union Mojtaba Shaadlou, Trend reports citing ILNA.

Iraq has stated that it will not import tomato, cucumber, eggplants, melon, sweet melon cantaloupe, and watermelon, he said adding that Iran has faced a 30 percent decline in fruit purchases in the domestic market in recent weeks.

The official underlined cost of transportation, labor and packaging have increased about 100 to 200 percent which is expected to reduce sales.

Due to sufficient supply, Iraq will ban the import of six types of agricultural products from July 21 including potato, watermelon, tomato, cucumber, and eggplant, Hamid al-Naif, the spokesman at the Iraq Agriculture Ministry has announced.
