Tajikistan reports slight drop in staple food prices - WFP

BAKU, Azerbaijan, December 28. The World Food Programme (WFP) has published a 'Market Situation Update' for Tajikistan for December 19-25, Trend reports with reference to the WFP.

According to the WFP, compared to the last week, prices for basic commodities such as 1st-grade flour, vegetable oil/cotton and sugar in Tajikistan continue to decrease by 1-2 percent due to an increase in their stocks in markets.

During the reporting period, the average staple food prices in Tajikistan were (per 1 kg/liter):

wheat flour (1st grade) - 6.2 somoni ($0.60);

rice - 13.8 somoni ($1.3)

sugar - 10.7 somoni ($1.04)

milk - 5.9 somoni ($0.57)

chicken - 35.5 somoni ($3.4)

beef - 61.9 somoni ($6)

potatoes - 4.5 somoni ($0.44)

onions - 4.4 somoni ($0.43)

WFP Tajikistan, in partnership with the agricultural advisory organization Neksigol Mushovir has been monitoring commodity prices in markets across the country. Markets monitored include 5 major markets and 10 minor markets. The focus is on the main commodities that are consumed by the population of the country. Prices are assessed at the start of each week.

Notably, as of December 28, 2022, the official exchange rate set by the National Bank of Tajikistan is 10.20 TJS/1 USD.
