Uzbekistan to create new methanol production plant, backed by US

BAKU, Azerbaijan, May 25. MTО Central Asia, regional polymer producer, has signed an agreement with Air Products, a chemical industry company from the US, on the construction of a methanol production plant in Uzbekistan, Trend reports.

The facility with production capacity of 1.34 million tons per year will be part of the gas chemical complex for producing olefins from methanol in Uzbekistan. The plant will be constructed within the Karakul Free Economic Zone, located in the Bukhara region of Uzbekistan, covering an area of 15 hectares. The expected operational date is 2025, with an estimated lifespan of 25 years.

The production capacity will exceed 730,000 tons per year. The company will produce 250,000 tons of polypropylene per year, as well as low-density polyethylene (80,000 tons per year), ethylene-vinyl acetate (100,000 tons per year), and polyethylene terephthalate (300,000 tons per year).

The methanol production plant will ensure a sustainable supply of methanol, hydrogen, and other technical gases, including oxygen and nitrogen, required for the production processes of the MTО gas chemical complex.

Upon completion, the facilities of the plant will include hydrogen production unit and air separation unit, primarily producing hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen, methanol production unit for synthesizing gas and its subsequent conversion into methanol, based on Haldor Topsoe technology.

The establishment of this methanol production plant represents a significant step towards advancing Uzbekistan's chemical industry, fostering economic growth, and promoting self-sufficiency in the production of high-value polymer products.
