ACWA Power to develop Uzbekistan’s green hydrogen and ammonia manufacturing

BAKU, Azerbaijan, January 21. ACWA Power, a leading Saudi developer, investor, and operator of power generation, and the Uzbek government have signed an agreement at a recent meeting, Trend reports via the press service of ACWA POWER.

According to the source, an agreement was signed on setting up a green hydrogen complex and implementing a pilot project for green ammonia production in Uzbekistan. The agreement was concluded between ACWA Power and the Ministry of Energy of Uzbekistan, as well as Uzkimyosanoat, a state-owned chemical company.

The complex for the production of green hydrogen is set to be connected to an existing ammonia plant in Chirchiq, 45 kilometers from Uzbekistan’s capital Tashkent. The planned capacity of the future complex is expected to be 3,000 tons of hydrogen per year

Saudi company plans to accelerate the development timeline for the complex and sets a target to put it into operation on December 2024. The source also said that the complex launch will reduce carbon emissions in the chemical industry and contribute to the decarbonization of the country’s economy.

At the same time, the green ammonia project involves the development of a 500,000-tons green ammonia feasibility study. As a result, Uzbekistan will reduce dependence on natural gas by 600 million cubic meters per year, as well as will decrease carbon dioxide emissions by 1.5 million tons annually.

Earlier in 2022, Saudi Arabian ACWA Power and National Power Grid of Uzbekistan JSC signed a new agreement for the construction of a wind power plant with a total capacity of 1500 MW in Karakalpakstan. The large-scale wind power plant is planned to be commissioned in 2026, producing 5.2 billion kWh of electricity per annum saving 1.5 billion cubic meters of natural gas.
