Iran may lift ban on import of home appliances

TEHRAN, Iran, September 1. Iran may lift the ban on import of home appliances, yet with certain restrictions on imports of finished products, Deputy Minister of Industry, Mine and Trade Mohammad Mehdi Baradaran told Trend.

"Iran's strategy to restrict import of finished products would continue as long as domestic finished products are being mass produced," he said, speaking on whether Iran would be eventually importing finished products.

He underlined the return of South Korean home appliances brands to Iran, following the possible lifting sanctions off Iran, within the framework of the ongoing talks on Iran's nuclear program.

Baradaran stressed that those foreign companies, which left Iran during the sanctions period, should be the last ones to return.

Two South Korean companies, LG and Samsung, decided to leave Iran in 2018 following the US withdrawal from the nuclear deal known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), that consequently prompted Iran to ban import of foreign home appliances.

The official indicated that the government's policy is to support domestic production of home appliances and the country has been reaching toward self-sufficiency in production since last year.
