Azerbaijan, Bulgaria mull exchange of electricity for gas

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Sept.8. Azerbaijan and Bulgaria have discussed the possibility of exchanging electricity for gas, Trend reports with reference to Bulgarian media.

Reportedly, the issue was discussed during the meetings of the acting minister of economy and industry of Bulgaria Nikola Stoyanov in Baku.

“Bulgaria and Azerbaijan may start exchanging electricity for gas. Bulgaria is one of the major electricity producers in its region and a lot of facilities in Azerbaijan fully gas-fired. If our country guarantees electricity supplies, Azerbaijan may undertake transportation of free volumes of gas to Bulgaria,” reads a message from Bulgaria’s ministry of economy and industry.

Nikola Stoyanov pointed out that it opens up yet another opportunity for diversification of Bulgaria’s economy, in particular, on the eve of winter.

Interconnector Greece-Bulgaria, which will transport one billion cubic meters of Azerbaijani gas per year, is expected to come on stream from October 1.
