BAKU, Azerbaijan, May 2. The next phase of the project on rehabilitation of former uranium productions in the Tabosar industrial site in Istiqlol city of Tajikistan involves the reclamation of two more tailing ponds by the construction of protective screens, Eduard Nikitin, the Director of Nuclear Decommissioning Programs at TVEL Fuel Company of Rosatom told Trend.
According to him, Rosatom is currently finishing the rehabilitation of the Tabosar industrial site. The work was carried out by TVEL, which is the integrator of the Russian nuclear industry on the elimination of nuclear legacy.
“A massive job was done to demolish the old reinforced concrete structures and equipment of the ore factory. All the large-scale scrap was contained in reinforced concrete bowls and was covered with a protective screen,” Nikitin said.
He added, that currently, the construction of a protective screen at the waste dump of the ore factory is finished, and the reclamation of the first and second tailing ponds is completed.
“The height of the uranium mound was lowered as much as possible, reaching a height of 36 meters, which exceeds the initial goal of reducing it from 65 to 45 meters,” Nikitin said.
Minister of Industry and New Technologies of Tajikistan Sherali Kabir, Director for Public Policy on Radioactive Waste, Spent Nuclear Fuel and Nuclear Decommissioning at Rosatom Oleg Kryukov, and General Director of the Central Design and Technological Institute of TVEL Mikhail Tarasov signed an agreemnet on rehabilitation work in Tajikistan’s Tabosar in September 2022.
